Two year-old sexual assault case against self-styled godman Asaram Bapu has witnessed several twists and turns. An FIR was lodged in Jodhpur Central Jail on September 2013 by the father of a 16-year old girl who studied at Chhindwara gurukul in Madhya Pradesh and accused Bapu of sexually molesting her at his ashram.
The alleged rape case against Asaram is stuck amidst the unnatural deaths of key witnesses which have happened one after another in the past few months, reports said.
A Muzzafarnagar-based family who had been a blind follower
of spiritual guru Asaram Bapu now wishes to erase their association with the 74-year-old
Bapu at the earliest.
The complaint was filed on August 20, 2013 by victim’s father
against Asaram alleging rape charges with medically proven evidence. Out
of 58 eye-witnesses, 43 agreed to walk on the path of truth to reveal what they
have seen in ashram but the substantial decrease in number of eye-witnesses and
the sudden increase in death toll of witnesses have raised many eyebrows on
case’s mystery.
Here are the 10 highlights related to the case investigation elucidating
what really happened from the day of filing complaint till now.
- On August 20, 2013 a complaint was filed by the victim’s father in Jodhpur Central Jail accusing Asaram Bapu of sexually assaulting his daughter.
- On September 1, 2013 after the constant hunger-strike from the victim’s family in Shahjahanpur demanding his arrest, in a late-night scoop, Jodhpur police arrested Asaram Bapu at Indore City. Asaram Bapu tagged the victim as ‘mentally unstable’.
- Investigations took a long time as there were many key witnesses in the case to retrieve information which could help in the case. During the probe, many other revelations were made by Jodhpur Police in 2014 against Asaram which also included the alleged charges of adulteration in his ashram’s Ayurvedic medicines.
- On March 4, 2014 two motorcycle-borne men threw acid on Dinesh Bhagchandani who left Asaram’s ashram in 2007 and was among the prime key witnesses of case.
- On June 2014, Amrut Prajapati was shot in his clinic in Rajkot who used to practice Ayurveda with him at the ashram and but had left 15 years ago.
- At one side, where key-witnesses’ deaths were raising its toll, on the other side, investigating officials said these deaths won’t interrupt the case’s probe and will be continued till the end.
- By the beginning of this year, the vicious circle of malicious twists and turns and the unnatural deaths of key-witnesses went on to increase with the death of Akhil Gupta, a 36 year-old dairy owner who was killed by some unidentified assailants in Muzzafarnagar district in Uttar Pradesh.
- The trail of unnatural deaths continues even now with the alleged death of Rahul Sachan an ashram worker (a sevadar) who was also among the list of key-witnesses of sexual assault case against Asaram.
- Now, the recent death of one of the prime eye-witnesses of case, 35-year-old Kripal Singh who was shot dead in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh by some unidentified motor-cycle borne persons on Jul 10 has escalated the number of attacks in the case.
- The victim, who has now turned an eighteen-year old, was a minor when she got sexually assaulted by the 72 year-old godman demands the CBI probe in the investigation of case.
